European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
